Johnston Senior High School Introduction: “My time here was amazing and there will always be a place in my heart for Johnston High” says Joseph Mansolillo, Class of 2008. Johnston High School is located at 345 Cherry Hill Rd., Johnston, RI. The Principal is Alicia Storey, Assistant Principal is Dr. Elizabeth Mantelli, and superintendant is Margaret Iacovelli “The mission of Johnston High School, in partnership with the parents and the community, is to promote the academic, social, physical, and psychological well being of each student. Together we will create an institution responsive to the needs of an ever-changing society by offering rigorous and dynamic programs, which challenge all students to achieve high standards, become life-long learners and lead self-fulfilling, productive lives.” Johnston High School has a ton of stuff to offer students. It is the only school in the state that still participates in the extra-curricular activity Float, where they build a float and ride on it during there homecoming parade. As you will see I will explain the community, school district, and the school itself.

Community Background:
Johnston contains around 28,524 people out of Rhode Island’s 1,050,788 (US Census 2008) and borders Providence, North Providence, Scituate, and Cranston. The population density is 1,205 people per square mile. There are 13,368 males and 15,156 females in Johnston. The median age is 40.7 while Rhode Island’s is 36.7 (City-Data 2008) Johnston is not a very diverse town, although it is better than before. There are many races which make up the Johnston community: White (Non-Hispanic) (95.5%) Hispanic (1.9%) Two or more races (0.9%) Black (0.7%) Other race (0.5%). According to City-Data, Johnston Ancestry Nationalities include: Italian (53.6%), Irish (15.4%), French (9.5%), English (7.5%), French Canadian (4.7%), and Portuguese (4.3%). It is too bad that Johnston isn’t very diverse because it is a community where the residents are not encouraged to participate in programs where interaction with other races and nationalities is encouraged and they learn about others through experience.
Out of Johnston’s population, those who are over 16 years of age, 62.9% are in the labor force. That leaves 37.9% unemployed. Estimated median household income in 2007: $56,174 (it was $43,514 in 2000.) In Rhode Island, it was 53,568.
The crime rate isn’t very high in Johnston, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t one. According to City-Data in 2007, there were 0 murders, 2 rapes, 9 robberies, 14 assaults, 49 burglaries, 429 thefts, 59 auto thefts, and 4 arsons. This chart compares Johnston’s town to the United States.
District Summary:
The mayor of Johnston is Joseph Polisena. He is very active in the students and the community. He is a person that is looking to change everything for the better as I know this through personal experience. 75% of students that live in Johnston go to Johnston Senior High School. Also 75% of funding comes from people in the town of Johnston. According to information works, it would take $7,194 to educate one student at Johnston High. According to SALT surveys, 39% of them said that the school would get back to them in a reasonable time if they were to contact them. 31% said that they were supportive of the community and the school. That isn’t a very good percentage to have. Parents should think that there child’s school is providing guidance and teaching them things to get them into the real world. Johnston had much controversy when there accreditation was taking from them. The community and town were in crisis, but they have done a lot of things to take forward steps and that’s why now they have their accreditation back. Although all this happening, they were still in good stock of supplies and books. They just built a whole new science building and re-did the floor of the gymnasium, which upgrades, while keeping the history of it by hanging banners etc.
A huge part of Johnston is its recreation department run by Dan Mazzulla. Johnston has almost every sport that your child could participate in. It runs a superb little league, junior league, senior league, and big league baseball program. I got time to interview assistant director Richard DelFino. He told me that “they are constantly trying to upgrade and add more sports to keep more and more kids involved.” Some new editions to the department are a brand new soccer facility, a Triple-Threat basketball camp during the summer that runs right before their Summer Day Camp. “It is all for the kids” he says, which I truly think everyone in the office believes having dealt with them in many situations.

School Analysis:
According to the SALT survey taken for the school year 07 – 08 student report, there was a 52% male response rate vs. a 48% female response rate. Out of all the respondents, responses showed that 22% receive a free lunch, 7% receive a lunch at the reduced price, and 72 receive neither. Of these respondents, 74% were white, 5% were African American, 9% were Hispanic or Latino, 3% were Asian, and the remaining 8% were multi-cultural. Johnston Senior High School, although mostly made up of one racial entity (83% white students), does experience some diversity throughout the student community. 5% of the student community is made up of African American students, 2% is made up of Asian students, 9% is made up of Hispanic students, and 1% is made up of Native American students. Of these students, only 1% is a recipient of ESL/bilingual educational services. 99% of students receive no help from this department, however, no students are considered to be bilingual. According to Info works survey on Johnston Senior High School’s graduation rate, it was found that the percentage of students who graduated in 2008 was 78.6%. The dropout rate was 6.3%. The percent of students that completed their GED was 8.7%. 5% of the students receiving special education services are self contained, 16% receive general education with supports, and 79% are non-recipients. 0% of these recipients are housebound or hospitalized. Johnston High has a 90% attendance rate where the average of R.I. schools is 91%.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, I think that Johnston has relatively good numbers compared to other school in the state. It offers opportunities that some schools don’t and has a very safe environment which you could tell by the very low crime rate. Studying this project gave me a very in depth understanding on many things that I did not know about my own town. My favorite fact was that there the only school in the state who still participates in the extracurricular activity float. It shows school spirit and brings the community together. Johnston is on its way up making many changes and is improving every year.
